Why Morocco Raised Only $2.1M in Q3 2026 While MENA Hit $1.65B

In the third quarter of 2026, MENA venture funding more than doubled to $1.65 billion. Moroccan startups captured about $2.1 million across two deals. Here is what the numbers really say about the ecosystem.

The third quarter of 2026 was a record-breaking period for startup funding in the Middle East and North Africa. According to Wamda, startups in the region raised $1.65 billion across 145 deals, more than double the previous quarter in value. Morocco's share of that boom: about $2.1 million, spread across just two deals.

The numbers at a glance

  • MENA, Q3 2026: $1.65 billion raised across 145 deals, up 108% in value and 39% in number of deals quarter on quarter (Wamda)
  • Morocco, Q3 2026: about $2.1 million across two deals
  • Largest Moroccan deal: a $2 million extension of ORA Technologies' Series A, bringing the round to $10 million
  • Second deal: a round of about $100,000 whose recipient was not named

Where the regional money went

The regional surge was driven by a handful of very large rounds in the Gulf, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates: Barq raised $329.5 million, Tabby $233 million and Lendo $200 million, the last largely through debt. Mega-rounds like these can double a regional total on their own, which makes quarter-on-quarter comparisons volatile.

Morocco's quarter, month by month

The Moroccan picture deteriorated through the quarter. The country ranked fifth in MENA in July, disappeared from the rankings in August, and closed September with a single deal, tied for last place in the region.

A bad quarter, not necessarily a bad year

Quarterly figures are misleading in a small ecosystem, where one or two rounds can swing the total. The first half of 2026 was much stronger: Moroccan startups raised $28 million over six months according to Africa: The Big Deal, placing Morocco eighth in Africa. That period included Yakeey's $15 million Series A in January, the largest Series A ever completed in Morocco, and Agenz's $5 million seed in June.

Trackers do not agree on the size of the ecosystem. The Pulse, using Tracxn and Médias24 data, counts more than $100 million raised by Moroccan startups in 2026, while Africa: The Big Deal counted $28 million for the first half. Definitions of what counts as a Moroccan startup, a disclosed deal or debt funding explain much of the gap.

The structural problem behind the numbers

The weak quarter points to an issue we have described before: Morocco has built a pipeline of seed and early-stage funding, largely thanks to public programs like Innov Invest, but it still lacks the larger Series A and growth rounds that turn promising startups into regional leaders. As we argued in Why Local Capital Matters, the depth of domestic capital shapes how far local founders can go before they need foreign funds.

There are signs of movement. According to The Pulse, the decree creating a catalytic fund for startups has been published, with MAD 347 million meant to mobilize MAD 2.5 billion from other investors. Its impact will depend on how fast that money reaches funds and founders.

What founders should take from it

  • Plan for longer fundraising cycles and keep enough runway to survive a dry quarter
  • Combine sources: public programs, local funds, corporate investors and, where possible, revenue. Our guide to startup investors in Morocco maps the options
  • Treat external funding as a tool, not a milestone, as we explained in Do All Startups Need External Funding?
